A tour de force...

We had some very special visitors from New York and we've been very busy touring around Sydney and beyond with them. Here are a few photos of our recent adventures.

Wild kangaroos in Hunter Valley

Surfers in Manly Beach

Jane asked for photos of koalas, so here it is. Koalas are even cuter in person, if possible.
We haven't seen one in the wild yet but we're working on it.

Ferries and Fairy Penguins!

The day was ending, but we weren't ready to settle in for the night just yet. So, as the sun was setting, we caught a ferry from Circular Quay to Manly, a suburb of Sydney. It was our first time on this commuter ferry, which felt more like being on a cruise ship. We watched the sunset over the Harbour Bridge and we felt entirely transported. But, I'm about to get to the best part--fairy penguins! We were on a mission to spot these little creatures and we did. We almost took a long walk in the dark through the bush to Collins Beach when a lovely Australian woman working at a bookshop told us to skip that (whew!) and head back to the wharf. We weren't sure if these penguins really existed, but one guide book and the woman at the store insisted. These penguins are tiny and they are typically sighted at dusk when the males return from their long day fishing. How they find their way back to that tiny spot of sand is a mystery to us. The male has to dry off before he's allowed to reenter the nest and that's why we had a chance to spy these little guys out in the open. Hearing them argue with their partners was pretty incredible. We imagined the female penguin squawking, "You can't come in yet. You need to dry off more!" Finally one of the penguins we saw squeezed between the boardwalk planks and settled in for the night (no getting on a ferry for him). Incredible! Then we warmed up over dinner at Garfish (fantastic food) and then with hot chocolate in the ferry terminal.

This was one spot where we saw three penguins, two hanging out in the dark space between the rocks and another chirping and walking over the boulders. So small, so beautiful.

Look closely in the upper left corner and you can see a blurry image of Mr. Silverwing, the penguin that lives closest to the ferry terminal. No flash allowed, as were reminded by the penguin wardens... Adam and I are putting in an application to be volunteer penguin wardens. Someone's gotta look out for the little guy.

Sydney update

We have been busy in Sydney and have many more photos to post, but we've been slacking in our blogging. Last weekend, the day after we went to Cockatoo Island for the Biennale, we went to the Aroma Festival. It's a one-day festival celebrating coffee, tea, and chocolate from around the world... what could be better? It drew the largest crowds we've seen in Sydney yet, so us New Yorkers felt right at home. Sydneysiders take their coffee very, and we mean very, seriously. Drip coffee is not made, served, or discussed here--only espresso. You can have lattes galore but don't even think about drinking regular coffee from a pot--nope. But don't worry, you can always combine an espresso drink with a camel ride, as many people were doing at the Aroma Festival... just riding a camel around, looking at the Harbour Bridge and the Opera House. What?!

Photos to come.

17th Biennale of Sydney!

The Biennale is a contemporary art festival that takes place every two years (hence the name) in Sydney. Several of the pieces were located on Cockatoo Island so we took our first ferry ride in Sydney to get there (we did not see cockatoos, but did see many aggressive gulls). Many of the art pieces were located in old buildings and military structures. We went with our friend Mark who humored me as I tried to impress him with my knowledge of Australia. Below are some of our favorite photos from the day.

Here is Adam in front of the Sydney Museum of Contemporary Art before we got on the ferry.

For all the psychologists out there, here is a giant neuron, one of the pieces in the Biennale.
You can see the Harbour Bridge and the Opera House in the background.

More wildlife favorites...

On our second day in Sydney we were walking through the Botanic Gardens near the Opera House and saw an entire flock of white cockatoos, at which point we made ogling fools out of ourselves in front of our Australian friends.

This is another shot of one of the kangaroos we saw munching grass in a clearing at Blue Mountain National Park.

Kookaburras sit in the old gum tree... that Australian nursery rhyme came from somewhere.
